  1. Greg P. Says:

Nice show. I’m always in line with plenty of AT&T bashing.

I’m assuming AT&T’s 3G Microcell is $20 IN ADDITION to your existing service and data plan charges? This wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the show, but I can’t imagine them not still charging you for the already exorbitant data plan. I was also wondering, because this wasn’t mentioned, does the mini 3G tower you’re creating have a user limit? When my parents were using Sprint mobile broadband, they tried to sell us the Mifi adapter by Novatel, and it sounds like a similar technology to the Microcell. However, it had a limit of, I think, 5 or 6 people that could take advantage of the Wifi hub you were creating. If this is true for AT&T, it seems less like a “good samaritan” piece of hardware and more like a “bring this to a lunch meeting to make sure everyone has wifi” device. In that sense, the $20 charge makes a little more sense, considering you’re allowing people who otherwise wouldn’t have connectivity to leech off of AT&T’s backbone.

While Facebook lite is a neat idea, I think they’re going to have a problem if they keep its existence separate from Facebook proper. I’m betting that, if Lite is as popular as they’re hoping it might be, it will become a “switch to Lite” button on the standard Facebook toolbar. IMO, it already should be. I check Facebook daily, and I hadn’t even heard of this service until you guys brought it up. It may just be in Beta, but so is half the internet. I would think for Facebook that marketability outweighs functionality, especially given their track record.

Also, it was H.G. Wells’ birthday yesterday, not Orson Welles. For shame!

  2. LJ Says:

Good point on the FB lite, Greg. I will look more into the AT&T microcell for the next podcast…right now its a very limited roll-out (to one city :( ).

As for H.G. Wells’ B-Day, we recorded on 9/21 which was his birthday. Glad you are keeping us honest though.

  3. Greg P. Says:

Hey, Larry. Sean said “Orson Welles,” not H.G Wells, who is a completely different person. That’s what I was commenting on, not the fact that the day was wrong.
